Arshile Gorky's Portrait of Master Bill, 1929–1936. Oil on canvas. This painting appears to depict Gorky's friend, Willem de Kooning who said Gorky "had an extraordinary gift for hitting the nail on the head; remarkable. So I immediately attached myself to him and we became very good friends." But some claim the portrait is actually of a Swedish carpenter to whom Gorky gave art lessons.
