The Press
The Press is the common voice of a nation. In the illumination and enlightenment of a nation, in furnishing a nation with the intellectual nourishment it needs, in short, ensuring that the nation, the sole target of which is to achieve happiness, walks on a joint path, the press constitutes a force, a school, a guide for such nation. (1922)
I would like to mention the highly appreciated responsibilities of the press in daily life, political life and in the development and progress of the Republic.
There is no need to mention how delicate a situation it is to make absolute use of the freedom of press. Beyond all kinds of legal reservations, a man of letters should have the solemn obligation to regard and respect science, requirements of the day and his own political considerations as well as the rights of the citizens and the esteemed interests of the country, which are beyond all private considerations. And it is this obligation that may ensure public order. Even if there should be failures and faults on this path, the effective instruments to remedy these faults will not be as in the older days, certain institutions that take the press under control. Quite the contrary, the means of removing troubles, born out of the freedom of press, shall be the freedom of press itself. (1924)
But if those fundamental principles, established within the guiding and mature understanding of the Grand Assembly, suggesting that troubles stemming from the freedom of press may only be resolved by way of freedom of press enable those who are far from virtue, which is the spirit of the Republic, to act as plunderer within the press; if the ill-omened affects of the ideas of those deceptive and seductive individuals gives rise to the death of innocent citizens, working on their farms or to the loss of their homes and finally if these deceptive individuals make recourse to the waste type of brigandage and find the opportunity to make use of special favors of laws, then it will be without doubt, inevitable that the Grand National Assembly stretches out its taming and punishing arms in order to interfere and warn.
A press, bearing the mentality and moral values of the republic as a part of the world, may only be created by the Republic itself. While the vision of ruthless newspapers and their connections of the past appears in the minds of the nation, the neat and productive press of the Republic is flourishing. Only a press of such a mentality is able to facilitate and promote the work and the civil life of our noble nation. (1925)
A human society has general common feelings and ideas. The value, degree of civilization, desire and attitude of human societies can only be demonstrated according to the extent these general common feelings and ideas are revealed. For those who are charged with the administration of a human society or individuals, friendly or hostile, who are in the state of ruling over the fate of human societies, public opinion reflects the talents and value of those societies. Thus, nations are obliged to reflect their public opinion to the world. Besides, the public opinion of the whole world needs to be known. To know the public opinion of the whole world is without doubt necessary to arrange requirements of life. In this respect on the other hand, the press constitutes the primary and most important instrument.
The fact that the government shall put top priority on the press, the importance and supremacy of which is well known within the civilizations of the world and that the press is obliged to fulfill its duty in favor of the nation are among the matters the high Assembly definitely demands (1 March 1922)
Publications have the effect of preventing misuses or obliging the government to fulfill its duty properly.
People who are not of a noble mind foster struggles within the press for which they pay. It has been observed that the most vulgar lies have been disseminated by way of the press. There are also other dangers the press and freedom of mind are exposed to. There is the fear that the press and even intellectual societies separate from the attitude of the national government or become the instruments of secret political or economical mal-intentions.
The fact that the press is purchasable by international finance, that the latter has a secret impact on the press or that there is the affect of secret funds financed by foreign states; all these facts contribute to the fear that public opinion may be deceived and misleaded. But all these bad ideas stemming from freedom itself are in no way without remedy.
Journalism, which is no more than lucrative work at first, may turn into a social institution with time. Moreover, the intellectual and political education of the people may also be regarded as a guarantee. People get used to reading and comparing several newspapers.
Above all, it must be accepted that there must be good will and that people with good will, engaged in vital matters will always constitute the majority because it is possible to deceive half of the world at any time or the whole world at another time. But to deceive the whole world all the time is never possible.
Gentlemen, a society has its own common general feelings and ideas. The value, grade of civilization, demands and inclinations of societies can only be made apparent according to the extent they form their general feelings and ideas and express them. For people, who are charged with the administration of a human society or those friendly or hostile individuals, who are in the state of ruling over the fate of human societies, public opinion reflects the talents and value of those societies. Besides, public opinion of the whole world needs to be known. To know the public opinion of the whole world is without doubt necessary to arrange requirements of daily life. In this respect on the other hand, the press constitutes the primary and most important means.
The Press shall in no way be under pressure.
The Turkish press will constitute a iron fortress around the Republic, with the real voice and demands of the people. That will be a fortress of ideas, a fortress of understanding. It is the right of the Republic to expect this from the press. Today it is compulsory that the nation is wholeheartedly united in solidarity. The welfare and happiness of the public depends on this fact. The press is charged with a great deal of important work in the transmission of this fact to the ears, to the conscience of the nation. (February 1924, S.D.II)
The Turkish Revolution
What is the Turkish Revolution? This revolution refers to a wider change than the word “ Revolution “ first suggests. Today, our country is governed in the best way that has abolished all the others that were practiced in many centuries.
The bond among the individuals that the nation suggests for its existence has changed its form and essential character, in other words, the nation has instituted its unity by the bond of “Turkish Nationality” instead of the bond of religion and sect.
The nation acknowledges the fact that science and the means that can be a nation’s reason of existence and power in the international struggle, can only be found in contemporary civilization, as a solid principle.
These changes that our great nation has performed in the course of its life are in summary one of the most magnificent revolutions that is much deeper than any revolution. 1925 ( M. E. I. S. D. I, p. 28 )
The real revolutionaries are those who know how to penetrate the true tendency in the souls and conscience of the people they want to direct to the revolution of progress. I would like to take this opportunity to stress that the true owner of the political and social revolutions, and the wonders Turkish nation performed in the last years, is the nation itself. It is you. If this progress and capacity hadn’t existed, nothing would have been sufficient to create it. Undoubtedly, the impossibility of taking a society which is at a certain level of civilization to a much higher level in no time is obvious. This is the main principle of the revolutions we’ve made and we are still making. It is definitely essential to get rid of the mentality that cannot accept it. Until now, there have been many that have this mentality that benumbs and rusts society’s mind. The fabricated nonsense in the minds will surely be expelled. Unless it is completely expelled, it is impossible restore the mind to its true light. 1925 ( Atatürk’s B. N., p. 92 – 93 )
A destructed country on the edge of the cliff ... Bloody battles against many enemies ... Year long war ... And then, a new motherland, a new society, a new government that are esteemed at home and abroad, and continuous revolutions to reach these goals ... Here is a summary of the Turkish revolution. 1935 ( Atatürk’s S. D. I, p. 365 )
Which one should be preferred for Turkey, gradual or sudden progress? There are two ways. One of them, as you all know, is the way of the French Revolution: Regimes would change, counter revolutions against revolutions would be made, a century and a half would pass while the left thrashing the right, the right stomping on the left .... Does this nation have that much blood in its veins and that long time to wait? 1922 ( İsmail Habib Sevük, For Atatürk, p. 73 )
The law of the revolution is superior to the existing law. As long as we are not killed and the movement started in our minds is not suffocated, the revolution we have started will not stop even for a single moment. 1923 ( İsmail Arar, Atatürk’s İzmit Press Conference, P. 56 )
The revolution is as bright, as hot and as far from us as the sun. I always find my direction using this sun, and go forward, forward, forward until it is too scorching and bright to get any closer. Then I stop, and redirect myself using the sun. ( Ahmet Cevat Emre, Huhit Magazine, Year : 4, Issue : 48, 1932, p.2 )
There are some periods in a nation’s history when all the physical and moral forces must be united and aimed at the same direction to reach certain goals. In recent years, our nation perceived the important results of such a movement of unity.
All the nationalist and republican forces must unite their power to defend the revolution and the country against internal and external threats.
Forces of the same kind must unit in the same manner. 1931 (Atatürk'ün S.D. III, P. 90)
Let all the world know that there is only one side, that I am on the side of the republic, the political and social revolution. On this matter, I do not even want to think that any citizen of the new Turkish Republic feels any different. 1924 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II, p. 189 )
Those with fresh ideas are those with the real ideas who see and perceive the right path. This is the main desire and the point of view of the nation we all must comply to. 1925 ( Mustafa Selim İmece, Atatürk’s S. D. K. and I. S. , p. 17 )
Friends, for the revolutions we have made and we are still making, we follow the light and the enlightened; our goal and skill is to enlighten the illiterate and encourage them to walk with us to reach the light. It would not only be ignorance, but also treachery to resort to a referendum which would hinder us from taking our republic to the level of contemporary civilization. In a country where 80 % of the population is illiterate, revolutions can not be decided by plebiscites!...1984 (Bâki Vandemir, Yerli, yabancı 80 imza Atatürk'ü Anlatıyor, P. 172)
We will perform all the requirements of the republic trusting the nation’s sharpness and capacity to progress, and never suspecting its determination. We know that we face many hindrances and difficulties. We will solve all of these problems one by one with determination and faith, and the unbeatable power of the love of the nation. It is that love of the nation, which is the source of never-ending power, fire and endurance in our hearts in spite of everything. 1924 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II, p. 166 )
Our nation is a self sacrificing one for its motherland, independence and freedom; This is a fact it has proven. Our nation is also jealously protective of the revolutions it has made. No one, no power can keep a nation that has such inbred virtues in its heart from treading the right path it walks on. 1924 ( Atatürk’s B. N., p. 84 )
As the height of the sun of revolution that rose on the horizon of Turkey, increased spreading its warmth, the heart of Turkish nation filled with the warmest love towards the world’s great and worthy feats, and all the principles of progress have been fully adopted. 1923 ( Atatürk’s T. T. B. IV, p.560 )
The obstacles that want to slow down the social and intellectual pace of our nation which is capable of every progress and maturity must absolutely be eliminated. 1924 ( Atatürk’s B. N., p. 86 )
We have made a great revolution. We have carried the country from one era to a new one. We have broken many old institutions. Those institutions have thousands of followers. We must not forget that they are waiting for the right time and opportunity. Even the most advanced democracies have employed hard measures to protect the regime, and we need the measures that protect the revolution even more than them. 1925 ( Avni Doğan, Independence, Establishment and Afterwards, p. 165 )
Turkish Women and Their Rights
As history and events witnessed, our great ancestors and their mothers have always had high virtues. The highest and most important one of these virtues is the fact that they’ve brought up valuable sons and daughters. I would like to stress that, along with their share in general duties, the most important, virtuous and beneficial duty of all for them is to be good mothers. For today’s mothers, to bring up sons and daughters that have the necessary virtues as the active members of today’s life, depends on having many high attributes in them as mothers. For that reason, our women must be more enlightened, more intellectual and more learned than men if they really want to be the mother of the nation. 1923 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II., p. 151 – 52 )
In our opinion: The woman in the era of the republic is an honorable, most esteemed being higher than anything else as she has been throughout Turkish history. ( Perihan Naci Eldeniz, T. T. K. Belleten, Vol. XX, Issue : 80, 1956, p. 740 )
Our religion has never demanded women to be lower than men. What god commands to men and women is to acquire the science and knowledge together. Men and women have to seek science and knowledge, and go wherever they could find them. A careful examination of Islamic and Turkish history would show that the rules we feel we have to obey actually do not exist. In Turkish social life, women have never been any less than men in science, knowledge or in any other field. 1923 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II., p. 86 )
Turkish women have to be the most enlightened, the most virtuous, the most moral women of the world. The duty of the Turkish woman is to bring up generations capable of protecting and defending the nation with their determination, power and mind. Women, who are the source of the nation and the essence of the social life, can carry out their duty only if they are virtuous. 1925 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II. P. 231 )
Put aside women, the main hope of the Republic of Turkey is not to have to send even men to the battlefields. But if and when an attack on the mighty presence of Turkish nation occurs, Turkish women will be ready, protective and active side to side with Turkish men. Turkish women have done it and will do it for it is a duty for the peace of humanity and peace in the world. ( Perihan Naci Eldeniz, T. T. K. Belleten, Vol. XX, Issue : 80, 1956, p. 742 )
The reason for the lack of success of our society lies in the indifference towards our women. Man comes into the world to live as long as his destiny allows him. To live is to act. So, if an organ of a society acts while the other lies idle, then it means that society is paralyzed. A society must accept all the conditions and necessities on which its success in life depends. So, if science and technology are necessary for our society, our men and women must equally master them. As you know, division of labor is necessary in social life as it is in all the other fields. In general division of labor, women should not only carry out their duties, but they should also take part in efforts for the prosperity and welfare of the society.
The most important duty of women is motherhood. If we remember that a child’s first school is his mother’s bosom, we can understand the utmost importance of this duty better. Our nation has decided to be a powerful one. One of the ways to ensure a powerful nation is to make sure our women are competent in every aspect. For that, our women will acquire scientific and technical information, and complete every phase of education that men complete. Thus women and men will walk side by side in social life helping and protecting each other. 1923 ( Atatürk’s S. D. II, p. 85 – 86 )
Friends, in many great events, Turkish nation have proven that it is a reformist nation that favors change. Although our nation attempted social reform and change before the last few years, it was never successful. Have you ever searched for the reason why this was the case? In my opinion, not to have begun from the basics is the reason . I will be frank on this: A society, a nation is comprised of two genders: male and female. Is it possible to lift a huge block up if you concentrate on one side of it and leave the other side completely unattended? Is it possible that a part of a society reach the skies while the other part is tied to the ground with chains? Undoubtedly, the steps forward on the path to progress should be taken by both genders together. 1925 ( Atatürk’s B. N., p. 95 )
Oh hero Turkish women, you are worthy to rise to the skies on our shoulders.
Today, the discipline to be taught by mothers to their children is not as simple as it used to be in the past. For today’s mothers, to bring up sons and daughters that have the necessary virtues as active members of today’s life, depends on having many high attributes in them as mothers. For that reason, our women must be more enlightened, more intellectual and more learned than men if they really want to be the mother of the nation.
A society is comprised of two genders: male and female. Is it possible to lift a huge block up if you concentrate on one side of it and leave the other side completely unattended? Is it possible that a part of a society reach the skies while the other part is tied to the ground with chains?
Women of no nation in the world can say “ We have worked harder than Turkish women, we have served as much as Turkish women to lead our nations to victory and independence. “
Actually, our women have always been side to side with our men in social life. Not only today, but for a long time past, our women have worked and struggled no less than men on the fronts, in farming, and in making a living.
Maybe it was our men who fought against the enemy with their bayonets, But it was our women who kept the narrow resources available for the army composed of men. It always has been, and it still is our women who make it possible for our country to go on.
No one can deny that it was always our women who made it possible for our nation to keep up its presence during this and previous wars.
It has always been them, the divine women of Anatolia who not only plowed and sowed fields, gathered firewood from the woods and mountains, took the crop to the market and cashed it, provided bread and butter to their families, but also carried ammunition to the front in oxcarts or on their shoulders under severe conditions.
